Golf ball technology has advanced in recent years. Finding the right ball for your game can be as advantageous as picking the right set of clubs. Many people are brand-loyal when it comes to balls, others use whatever they find in the trees. But there are many different specifications that you should consider when choosing the right ball to shoot as low as possible.
Lower spinning golf balls tend to decrease side spin of your shots, allowing the ball to fly straighter through the air. The ball may not travel as far in the air, but the lack of spin will result in increased roll upon landing. The mid spin golf ball bridges the gap between the low spinning golf ball and the high spinning balls. They try to incorporate the best of both distance and feel. The high spinning golf ball is designed to increase the balls spin in the air and increase feel on and around the greens, which will help players improve control.
The compression of a golf ball refers to how tightly wound its core threads are. The tighter they are wound, the harder or more compressed the core is. Golf balls come in a variety of compression rates, with the lower number representing lower compression. Compression is a measure of the deflection a golf ball undergoes when it is struck. It is measured between 0 and 200.
Lower compression balls tend to be softer and compress more to create more distance. Higher compression balls offer more control and are used by better players who can produce faster swing speeds to compress the ball.
So generally speaking….
Ideally, you want a ball that tends to fly as straight as possible and offers forgiveness on those all too familiar mishits. Distance is probably a priority. A Two-piece distance ball will give you decent distance with run, and hopefully, reduce the effects of a hook and or slice.
Look to maximize distance through the bag. Most players in this subset benefit from higher-launching iron shots; the other emphasis should be on the ability to hit a variety of short-game shots. A mid spinning ball will offer solid distance with varied feel and softness.
You want a ball that’s producing the right spin off the tee and also provides ample control with the important clubs. You’re probably already producing enough spin on the ball with your skill. Most decent golfers are more suited to a multilayer golf ball.
