History of the Aussies

in the Presidents Cup

Wilson Golf has been manufacturing premium golf equipment since 1914 and has more Major wins than any other golf brand, in fact Wilson Golf has won a Major in every decade since the 1920's.

The 14th edition of the Presidents Cup is here. Quail Hollow plays hosts to the 28 year old competition of the USA vs The Internationals. The Presidents Cup began in 1994, with a competition held at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia, USA. Through the journey, the world's best players have come together to compete for team, country and the honour of raising the famous Presidents Cup trophy.

Today we look back at those 3 events here in Australia, as well as a preview for next weeks edition.

1998

The 1998 Presidents Cup was one of victory for the International Team under the direction of Peter Thomson. For the first time in the event's history (and the only time to date), the Internationals defeated the United States Team and Jack Nicklaus, who was serving as captain for the first of four terms, 20.5 to 11.5 in the second-largest margin of victory in the cup's history. The Royal Melbourne Golf Club hosted the event for the first time, and then Prime Minister of Australia John Howard was appointed the Honorary Chairman.

2011

In 2011, the Presidents Cup descended upon The Royal Melbourne for the second time in the event’s history, offering a 2009 rematch of defending champions, U.S. Team Captain Fred Couples against an International Team once again led by Greg Norman. Ultimately, the U.S. Team retained the Cup with a wire-to-wire 19-15 result with Jim Furyk delivering a perfect 5-0-0 record to solidify the finish. Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard, served as Honorary Chairwoman, marking the first time in event history a woman held the role.

2019

2019 saw the ‘magic in Melbourne’ inspire what could be considered as the most exciting Presidents Cup in history at The Royal Melbourne. In one of the closest contests in the event's history, the Ernie Els-led Internationals to the lead on the 4 four sessions, before the US claimed the cup in an amazing come-from-behind fashion in Sunday's singles matches.

The 2022 Presidents Cup will be the 14th edition of the competition, held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, from September 23–26, 2022(Aus Time). This will be Quail Hollow's first time hosting the Presidents Cup. The matches were originally scheduled for spring 2021, but due to the Covid19 pandemic, has moved a year later. Davis Love III will captain the U.S. team, and Trevor Immelman will captain the International team, who has lost a number of players due to players defecting from The PGA Tour to LIV Golf. This being said, the US team are hot favourites to retain the trophy for the 13th time.
Australian’s Adam Scott (for a 9th time) and Cameron Davis (first time) will represent the Internationals.
